At 55, the girl apparently still wants to have fun.
She will play Penn’s Peak near Jim Thorpe on Aug. 13. Tickets, $38 and $43, went on sale Friday. The show will come amid Lauper’s “Girl’s Night Out” tour with Rosie O’Donnell. She’ll appear with O’Donnell in Washington, D.C., the night before her Penn’s Peak appearance. Lauper last played Penn’s Peak in 2003, dueting with cabaret-pop singer-songwriter Nellie McKay, a Pocono Mountain High School graduate. She played F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts in Wilkes-Barre in 2005. Lauper’s latest album, 2008’s “Bring Ya To The Brink,” just missed making the Top 40, but received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Electronica/Dance Album. It was her 13th Grammy nomination. She’s also had nominations for two Emmy Awards, two American Music Awards, seven American Video Awards and 18 MTV Awards. Her last album to crack the Top 10 was “True Colors,” the follow-up to “She’s So Unusual,” in 1986. But Lauper has continued to influence generations of young singers. In January she attended President Obama’s inauguration and performed at the Out for Equality Inaugural Ball hosted by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation. She also founded The True Colors Concert Tour, which combined music with a show of solidarity against discrimination and for equality and raise public awareness about the issues facing the gay, bisexual and transgender community. Last week, she appeared on the finale show of FOX-TV’s “American Idol,” doing a duet with similarly hair-styled fourth-place finisher Allison Iraheta on Lauper’s “Time After Time.” Her appearance might have been a considered so unusual in light of her comments about the show to The Morning Call in a 2005 interview. “When you turn on the boob tube and you watch, you know, ‘Star Search’ or whatever the hell that is — ‘American Idol’ — you know, that is the epitome of what wrecked our business. Not our business, per se, but music. “You got your corporate guy. You got your kids trying out who think there’s a shortcut. There’s no shortcut. There are no shortcuts to developing into the artist that you would hope you could be. [Pop stars], they come and they go. … It’s not how other people see you, it’s how you see yourself. … That’s the most important thing. “All the other accolades, and all the bull----, who cares what Simon thinks? Yeah, Simon’s gonna choose your songs, he’s gonna dress you, he’s gonna try and find the right thing for you. And then who the hell are you? You’re Simon’s boy or Simon’s girl. But you’re not your own girl, and you’re not you own boy. You wanna be your own person — you wanna have your feet grounded and you want to step forward and say something that means something to you because you’re creating something that’s heartfelt.” Source: www.themorningcall.com |

| MUSCATINE, Iowa — The Muscatine Wildcats will be at bat when a movie about Little League baseball and parental involvement films here this summer. "The Grand Slammer," based on a mock documentary by Moline, Ill., brothers Ryan and Tyler Cullen, will film in the Quad Cities area for six weeks starting in July. "We'll be shooting in several parts of the Quad City area," producer-director Terrell Tannen said in a phone interview Wednesday, "but we will be doing a good amount of shooting in Muscatine." The city's historic Second Street and houses overlooking the Mississippi River will be featured in the film, Tannen said. "We like the feel of the Quad City area," Tannen said. "We really like the riverside cities." Ryan Cullen, now based in Las Vegas, wrote the screenplay based on his experiences playing Little League in the Quad Cities. The 1997 Moline High School graduate played Little League baseball for a team his father coached. The movie takes a player' perspective of their parents in the stands, Tannen said. The family comedy highlights a distorted emphasis parents place on their children to win Little League games, Tannen said. "The idea is, 'Who is playing this game anyway?'" he said. In "The Grand Slammer," parents who misbehave at games are placed in an outfield "jail" from which the movie gets its title.
Much of the rest of the cast, including enough players to fill the Muscatine Wildcats and three other Little League teams, will be cast from the Quad City area. "We want to cast as many parts locally as we can," Tannen said. Some skilled jobs will also be offered to residents trained in film-making, he said. Tannen, whose film credits include the movie "Gospel Hill," said Iowa offers an "aggressive incentive" to attract movie-makers once lured to Canada or other states. A bill signed by Gov. Chet Culver in 2007 offers tax credits for 25 percent of both investors and producers' costs. Said Tannen, "Iowa is now one of the best." Source: www.muscatinejournal.com |

| SAN FRANCISCO (CN) - A German concert tour promoter claims they are owed $800,000 after singer Cyndi Lauper refused to perform several shows in Europe in violation of a contract negotiated through her agent. Plaintiff Moderne Welt claims that with Lauper's knowledge, they spent money on advertising, selling tickets and securing venues, only to have Lauper back out of the agreement "without warning." The July tour was to include scheduled performances in Stuttgart, Munich and Hamburg. According to the complaint, Lauper claimed that prior "film and television commitments" prevented her from performing. Source: www.courthousenews.com | ![]() |

| Girls it's time to have fun If you were in high school in the 1980s then you know all about the young lady that encouraged girls to have fun, and whose unique blend of punk and new wave style, and her free-spirited persona, was a hit with almost every genre of music lovers. That young woman — Cyndi Lauper — is bringing that free spirit style to the stage at Atlantis on Saturday, May 23, and you need to be there with your girls, because you know that "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun." It was your kids night out last week with Miley Cyrus, now it's time to take time out for yourself, and head back to the 80s with a few of your girlfriends in tow and catch Cyndi Lauper on stage at the Atlantis stage. Remember "Time After Time," "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," "Yeah Yeah," "Witness," "She Bop"? Wouldn't it be fun to witness Lauper perform these song live, along with some of her songs from her new collection "Bring Ya To the Brink," a dance album and one that you can move to and enjoy on a surface level, but which has a lot to discover inside the lyrics with some songs that can get pretty deep, according to Lauper herself, from comments she made on her website.
"I used to like her," she said, marveling at how inexpensive the tickets were priced at $95, and breaking out into an old Lauper favorite "Time After Time.' "Saturday is my day, and if I wasn't having a surprise dinner party I would have gone to the concert," she said with a laugh. "Unfortunately I won't be able to go because my husband [Johnny] is throwing me a surprise dinner party, and having people over to the house, so I'm not making any plans. "Just for something to do I would have been there," she said. Strachan-Reckley remembers her love for Cyndi Lauper's songs. "I was in high school in the 1980s when Cyndi Lauper had all her hits, and I was one of those people who liked all kinds of music. For a white rocker, black people at that time could relate to her songs," she said. "She had songs for everybody." After more than 20 years, Lauper is still proving that she has the heart and soul to keep her legion of fans compelled by her every move. According to Lauper's site, the genesis of "Bring Ya To The Brink," a title culled from the lyrics of the percussive stand-out jam "Lyfe," lies within her unique, often sharp-edged observations of the world. "I am always inspired by what I see every time when I step outside my door," she says. "The world is filled with fascinating people struggling and surviving and living their lives the best way they can. The more I see, the more I write down. For me, the words become my views of life and my poetry." According to her publicity the idea to dress the poetry that fills her 12th career album in the vibrant threads of dance music was logical. "I liked the contrast of music that could be celebratory, and even pretty against words that are sometimes a little intense," she says. Lauper became the first artist in history to have five top-10 singles from a debut album. Along the way, she continually won accolades as a singer, musician, actor, and writer. She has been nominated for 13 Grammy Awards, two Emmy Awards, two American Music Awards, seven American Video Awards and 18 MTV awards. With fans like Strachan-Reckley, Lauper has raised the creative bar, and is showing them that she can hit what is destined to mark another career success. "I still have so much to say and share," she says. "I'm grateful for each and everyday that I get to make music. As long as there's a corner of the world where people want to hear me, I'll be there . . . singing my heart out." Source: www.thenassauguardian.com |

| Cyndi Lauper and others who took part in the American Idol Season 8 Finale talked to Entertainment Weekly. Here's what Cyndi had to say: Cyndi Lauper, who performed "Time After Time" with Allison Iraheta: I tried to create a little band. I rocked it a little for [Allison], because she has that rock-and-roll voice and it's a really neat voice. You know, it's hard to do that [show]. I probably would never been anybody if I had to come through Idol. I don't think Bob Dylan would've either! It's really hard what they're doing, so I give them all props. H&M Collaborates with major celebrities for Fashion Against AIDS - Press Release ![]() Some of the biggest celebrities from the world of fashion, music and style will be joining H&M and Designers Against AIDS (DAA) for Fashion Against AIDS, to help fight the disease and raise youth awareness. Katy Perry, Dita Von Teese, N.E.R.D and Yoko Ono are among the artists who will collaborate with H&M on designs for T-shirts, T-shirt dresses, vests and bodies. 25% of the sales price will be donated to youth HIV/AIDS awareness projects. The collection, in 100% organic cotton, for both guys and girls will go on sale in H&M's youth DIVIDED department from May 28 2009.
"H&M and Fashion Against AIDS are so important to us because we could never reach so many young people on our own. AIDS is still very much a subject that's vitally important today. People build their attitude towards their sex lives when they're very young, so it's important for them to realize that safe sex is a vital part of that as early as possible." Ninette Murk, founder, Designers Against AIDS. For this year's Fashion Against AIDS collection, the message is loud and clear, with bold slogans and colours as vibrant as the summer. "PROTECTION IS POWER" reads the print from RÓISÍN MURPHY across a T-shirt, wrapped around the front and back of a body, while N.E.R.D uses a clever graphic to shout out "USE YOUR BRAIN" on coloured vests and T-shirts. ESTELLE's contribution has the slogan "LIFE IS TOO SHORT - HAVE SEX BE SAFE" printed on a vest next to a sassy silhouette of an empowered woman, while KATY PERRY's clever safe sex message is "IT'S WHAT'S ON THE OUTSIDE THAT COUNTS" on both a body and a cap-sleeved Tee. CYNDI LAUPER’s 80's feeling design has the words "GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE SAFE SEX" as if scribbled in pink lipstick on a black vest, while YOKO ONO repeats the words "IMAGINE PEACE" in languages from around the world on coloured T-shirts. ROBYN's feisty statement is "Protect your body" on a T-shirt with printed diamonds, while DITA VON TEESE, already a champion of AIDS causes, offers an alluring image of her iconic red lips and arched brow on a cute cap-sleeved Tee. "It's an honor to be asked to take part in this brilliant project. Every little thing that we do as individuals can add up to something that makes a major impact in the fight against HIV. With the purchase of these stylish t-shirts, you can be a part of something that makes a huge difference in this pandemic, while looking super-chic!" Dita Von Teese.
It's the second year that H&M have teamed up with the charitable organisation Designers Against AIDS to spread the message of safe sex to the young. Last year’s campaign was a stunning success, with over SEK 15 million donated to HIV/AIDS-preventive projects. This year’s beneficiaries are Designers Against AIDS, YouthAIDS, UNFPA and MTV Staying Alive Foundation. FASHION AGAINST AIDS CELEBRITIES Dita Von Teese, Katy Perry, Róisín Murphy, Estelle, Cyndi Lauper, N.E.R.D, Robyn, Yoko Ono, Yelle, Moby, Katharine Hamnett, Dangerous Muse, Tokio Hotel. | Madonna and Cyndi Lauper take style notes as Lady Gaga parades latest leotards in concert It was a star-studded audience at Lady Gaga's concert in New York last night, with the likes of Madonna and Cyndi Lauper in attendance. But if these images are anything to go by, concert-goers at the city's Terminal 5 venue had not put nearly as much effort into their outfits as the 'Poker Face' star. Madonna, who arrived with an entourage that included toyboy Jesus, daughter Lourdes and fashion photographer Stephen Klein, wore cropped camouflage combat trousers with dated flat pointed slippers. Only a fitted leather jacket offered a glimpse of the 50-year-old's toned physique, but unkempt hair was otherwise in keeping with her scruffy look. Jesus, in turn, could have been a waiter or bodyguard with his black shirt and trousers, while young Lourdes, 14, opted for bizarre neon green leggings and brogues, if anything, the most in keeping with Lady Gaga's outrageous style. Like Madonna, Cyndi Lauper also sported a leather jacket, but the lace ensemble beneath was rather mutton-dressed-as-lamb.
But out on stage, Lady Gaga was undeniably the belle of the ball, performing in an array of typically revealing body-conscious outfits. Changing her costume six times throughout the evening, the peroxide pop singer opened the show with a monochrome houndstooth body plate astride a co-ordinating scooter. Accessorised with a black geometric headpiece and open-toe patent shoe-boots, the ensemble paid homage to her fabulous figure. The look was marred only moments into the show however, after the the singer managed to rip her fishnet stockings. Throughout the performance the tights appeared to become increasingly torn, and by her final bow a large rent could be seen on both her right and left thighs. Most extraordinary, however, was a bubble-inspired creation made entirely of plastic orbs. Lady Gaga, who wore it with perspex mules, played a transparent piano also filled with balls - at one point, even using her foot on the keyboard. A highlight was a nude corseted leotard embellished with crystals. The showgirl-themed outfit featured a hat decorated with the word 'Gaga' - fingerless gloves were also printed with the star's stage name. A sculptural bustier with futuristic triangular silver panels, and exaggerated peplum also featured among the costumes. Lady Gaga took her bow alongside dancers clad in Louis Vuitton Steven Sprouse-print trousers, co-ordinating with her shoes. Wearing a 1950's-style yellow jacket, the pointed shoulderpads, corseted waist and full peplum made for a glamorous finale. But even after the concert was over the singer clearly hadn't tired of extraordinary ensembles. Sporting her now signature blonde bow, she wore a risqué red jumpsuit that plunged to her midriff. Mimicking the pointed shoulders of her final outfit, the bra-less star was clearly sporting decorative nipple tassels thanks to the sheer fabric. Lace-inspired cuffs, a cross pendant and stratospheric platforms completed the look as boyfriend Speedy accompanied her to Manhattan hangout Bungalow 8 after the show. The forced financial belt-tightening that's occurring in nearly every sector has, unsurprisingly, begun to trickle down to arts programs that relied heavily on corporate sponsorship; the Tribeca Film Festival was no exception. Yet the consensus amongst many critics is that this year's leaner lineup has been more of a blessing than a curse, and the hit-to-miss ratio was higher than ever before. Sure, there were the usual red-carpet, star-studded draws, but nothing on the preposterous scale of, say, 2006's RV premiere. For 2009, the most noticeable and welcome change to the program was the overall strength of the debut narrative features, many of which had a style, confidence, and maturity that's uncommon in first films.
Given Stark's involvement and Lungulov's admitted idolization of Jim Jarmusch, the film feels surprisingly more reminiscent of early Hal Hartley, particularly in such quirky minor characters as an America-hating cab driver and a dubious New York Samaritan. Even the shambling, apathetic Robert comes off as a latter-day Henry Fool. There's only a hint of political ideology or commentary on recent events in this tale of two cities, with discourse limited to lines such as "you don't live in Belgrade, you survive in Belgrade." At times, the film leans toward the sentimental, but Lungulov adroitly steers it away from some cliché-riddled cliffside disaster called How Robert Got his Groove Back. With its near sprightly pace and remarkably strong performances, Here and There is a rom-com for the love-is-dead crowd, a subversive and clandestine example of an overly familiar genre.
