Black Tie Dinner To Present Lauper With ’09 Media Award -
Singer/activist lauded for work with True Colors Tour, True Colors Fund

Black Tie Dinner co-chairs Laurie Foley and Ron Guillard announced this week that singer and LGBT rights activist Cyndi Lauper will be presented with Black Tie's Media Award during the 2009 event, set for Oct. 3 at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel.

Lauper, who has a lesbian sister, founded the True Colors Tour in the summer of 2007, gathering a wide array of musical performers, comedians and more to present a series of concerts around the country.

The tour repeated with different acts in summer, 2008, and this summer True Colors will present out comedian Wanda Sykes on tour. She performs at Nokia Theater in Grand Prairie on July 12.

Lauper has also established the True Colors Fund, which will be launching an extensive public awareness and education campaign later this year. Black Tie officials said that the True Colors Tour and True Colors Fund have raised more than $200,000 and provided extensive media coverage for organizations such as Human Rights Campaign, PFLAG and CenterLink.

Lauper won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1985. She has been nominated for 14 Grammys, two Emmy Awards, two American Music Awards, seven American Video Awards and 18 MTV Awards. She released her 12th album, "Bring Ya to the Brink," last year, and it, too, was nominated for a Grammy.

Lauper has also appeared in several films and on television, and she made her Broadway debut as Jenny in "The Threepenny Opera" in 2006.

In a statement released this week, Foley called Lauper "a pioneering superstar," and said having her participate in the Black Tie Dinner will make this year's event "one of the most empowering, educational and entertaining events in our history."

Guillard added that Lauper will be a big draw for the dinner, which is especially important in raising funds for Black Tie's beneficiaries "in tough economic times like these."

He added, "For Cyndi, part of life's truth is exacting fairness, equality and an overall good for the people she loves."

For more information about Black Tie Dinner, go online to BlackTie.org, or call 972-733-9200 ext. 1.

Cyndi Lauper Takes PrideFest "Into The Night" -
MILWAUKEE- Wrapped in a feather boa bearing the hues of the rainbow, Cyndi Lauper showed her "True Colors" at Milwaukee's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Festival. Running about half an hour over her allotted time, Cyndi Lauper opened PrideFest encouraging patrons to be themselves and be proud.

"Be who you are!" Lauper said. "It's liberty and justice for all...Never forget the spirit. Your spirit. Happy Pride!" She then sang her hit single, "True Colors," the lyrics to which were a perfect match to the spirit of PrideFest. I see your true colors shining through. I see your true colors, and that's why I love you. So don't be afraid to let them show. Your true colors are beautiful like rainbows.

PrideFest attendance for Friday night actually rose 42 percent this year. Lauper sang to an audience that seemed to stretch beyond the grounds, to the edge of Lake Michigan. Reserved tickets for Lauper's show and pre-show meet 'n greet were completely sold out.

"We were very happy to see Cyndi encouraging our patrons to just have fun," said Kate Sherry, Communications Director. "She is truly an icon in the LGBT community from her incredible music to her advocacy for gay rights."

Before the headline show began, PrideFest President Scott Gunkel declared the Pride Festival officially open. This years annual PrideFest award for community service was granted to the Saturday Softball League (SSBL), which according to PrideFest producer Pete Minns, will "offer a world series to remember."

Gunkel offered a heartfelt thank you to the PrideFest board and production team, all of which are year-round volunteers, saying, "The PrideFest board and production team are a group of dedicated individuals who make this festival possible. If you see them in their blue shirts, be sure to stop them and thank them for their hard work."

But it was Cyndi Lauper who shined during the opening day of the festival performing her famous hits as well as a new hit single "Into the Night" from her recent album "Bring Ya To Tha Brink."

PrideFest continues Saturday, June 13, 2009 with a headline show by R&B entertainer and TV star Brandy. Sunday night's headline show will star the iconic Etta James with Deborah Cox on the Miller Lite Main Stage and Swedish singer September giving a special performance in the Dance Pavilion.

Cyndi Lauper Talks LGBT Rights Ahead of PrideFest -
The same fierce individualism that established Cyndi Lauper as one of the defining cultural sensations and fashion trendsetters of the 1980s kept her an icon in the gay community long after MTV retired her peppy hit "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" from regular rotation and children had stopped dressing as her for Halloween. After years of supporting AIDS research and LGBT causes, Lauper cemented her super-stardom in the LGBT community with her 1996 album, Sisters of Avalon, a dance-friendly disc filled with sympathetic portraits of same-sex partners, drag queens and AIDS victims. Lauper has since spent the better part of her career performing at pride and gay-rights events and tours, like last year's True Colors Tour with Joan Jett, Rosie O'Donnell, Tegan and Sara, the Indigo Girls and Wanda Sykes. Also last year she released her tenth album, Bring Ya to the Brink, a return to Sisters of Avalon-styled club music. In advance of her opening-night appearance at this year's PrideFest at Milwaukee's Summerfest grounds Friday night, Lauper spoke with the Shepherd about LGBT rights via e-mail.

You're known as a gay icon. How did you pick up that tag? How far back does your interest in LGBT issues date?

I've always been in step with the community even before I became famous for my music. Growing up I was made to feel like an outsider for being "different." So I totally related to that feeling that some folks in the community had of being alienated. And of course my childhood hero and hero still is my sister Elen who is a lesbian. So I saw the struggle first hand and growing up in the ’60s and ’70s how difficult it was to be gay.

How has your interest in LGBT issues shaped your songwriting? What was it that caused you to address LGBT concerns more openly on your 1996 album, Sisters of Avalon?

My songwriting is for everyone, not just LGBT community. "True Colors" has become the gay national anthem, but it's about being true to yourself not matter what anyone says otherwise. You are born the way you are born, Some folks are born to be suits, other artists, gay and straight. We all should have same right to live the way we want to and be who we are. And we should support each other for our differences. I did write a song called “Say a Prayer” that was for a friend that died from AIDS, and so I was speaking to that.

At this point, it seems most of the concerts you perform are for LGBT rights or other social justice issues. Do you feel an obligation to use your celebrity to advance these causes, or is there something else that draws you to these shows?

What I stand up for is civil rights for everyone. Right now the LGBT community does not have the same rights as the rest of us. Why is that? Folks who do not believe that the members of the LGBT community should have the same rights as everyone else is setting themselves up to be discriminated. The foundation of our country as equality for all, not equality for some.

You prominently endorsed Barack Obama last year. Have you been happy with his performance so far? Many critics complain that he hasn’t made LGBT rights enough of a priority.

I think he will come through. The great thing about our President is he is not bending to pressure form any groups. I feel confident that he won’t let the religious groups pressure him like Bush did. Unfortunately this country is in such a mess. He's only been in office a 100 days. He is dealing with a mess of a war, an economy that is a mess. I think once he gets some of these things sorted he will come through for us re: LGBT rights, because it's the right thing to do.

Cyndi Lauper: Bring Ya To The Brink -
Milwaukee, WI — Cyndi Lauper burst onto the world stage as the quintessential girl who wants to have fun. After more than 20 sterling years and global record sales in excess of 25 million, she has proven that she has the heart and soul to keep her legion of fans compelled by her every creative move. With her newly minted collection, Bring Ya To The Brink, Cyndi firmly asserts her position as one of the most beguiling, innovative, and downright exciting recording artists of this and any other generation.

The genesis of Bring Ya To The Brink, a title culled from the lyrics of the percussive stand-out jam "Lyfe," lies within Cyndi's unique, often sharp-edged observations of the world.

"I am always inspired by what I see every time I step outside my door," she says. "The world is filled with fascinating people struggling and surviving and living their lives the best way they can. The more I see, the more I write down. For me, the words become my views of life and my poetry."

For Cyndi, part of life's truth is exacting fairness, equality, and an overall good for the people she loves. It's to that end that she founded the landmark True Colors concert tour, which began its second annual journey across America in June 2008. The 24-city trek once again strove to combine great music with a show of solidarity against discrimination and for equality and raise public awareness about the issues facing the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

"It is absolutely insane to me that people are not allowed simple civil rights in this country simply because of their sexuality," she says.

In gathering artists that include the B-52s, Indigo Girls, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, and Joan Armatrading, among others, Cyndi is fulfilling a desire to give back to the community for the love and support they have given her throughout her career. The tour was a joint venture with the Human Rights Campaign (the nation's largest organization working for LGBT equality), as well as PFLAG, Centerlink, and the newly created True Colors Fund of the Stonewall Community Foundation.

"It's an honor to always have the genuine affection of the gay community," Cyndi says. "They have never turned their back on me. I will never turn my back on them. We've had a long and enduring love affair."

The roots of that affair can be traced to 1985, during which Cyndi won a Grammy award for Best New Artist and became the first artist in history to have five top-10 singles from a debut album. Along the way, she continually won accolades as a singer, musician, actor, and writer. She has been nominated for 13 Grammy Awards, 2 Emmy Awards, 2 American Music Awards, 7 American Video Awards, 18 MTV awards.

But it's as a master craftsman of her own recordings that give Cyndi her greatest sense of accomplishment. With Bring Ya To The Brink, she has raised the creative bar, hitting what is destined to mark another career watermark of success.

"I still have so much to say and share," she says. "I'm grateful for each and everyday that I get to make music. As long as there's a corner of the world where people want to hear me, I'll be there singing my heart out."

Milwaukee PrideFest

Cyndi Lauper headlining on the Miller Stage at Milwaukee PrideFest, Friday, June 12.

Pridefest Milwaukee, the nation's largest gay pride festival, will be over the weekend of June 12, 13, and 14 at the Henry Maier Festival Park at 200 N. Harbor Drive, just off I-794 and a few blocks southeast of downtown Milwaukee.

Cyndi Lauper To Perform At Mandela Concert -
NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) - Aretha Franklin, Queen Latifah, Cyndi Lauper, the Soweto Gospel Choir and France's First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy will perform in a concert next month to celebrate Nelson Mandela's 91st birthday.

The concert at Madison Square Garden on July 18 will honor the former South African president and international symbol of reconciliation and forgiveness on the first annual global "Mandela Day," which was proposed to commemorate his birthday and inspire people to improve their lives within their communities.

"Mandela Day is about creating a movement for positive change and establishing one day to reflect upon, celebrate and make manifest the values that guide Nelson Mandela," Tim Massey, the international director of Mandela's AIDS awareness charity 46664 -- his number while a political prisoner at Robben Island - said in a statement.

Dave Stewart, Josh Groban, Wyclef Jean and Jesse McCartney will also appear along with a host of other entertainers at the concert which is the culmination of a week-long series of events in the city.

Former President Bill Clinton, who will host a fundraising dinner with Mandela's wife Graca Machel in the week before the concert at Grand Central's Station's Vanderbilt Hall, described him as a great inspiration for everyone.

"In return for everything Madiba has taught us, we each owe it to him to support his work and legacy by doing and living our own as best we can, not just on this day, but throughout our entire lives," Clinton said, referring to Mandela, South Africa's first black president, by his clan name.

Mandela's 90th birthday was commemorated with a concert hosted by Hollywood actor Will Smith in London's Hyde Park.

NUNN ON ONE: MUSIC Cyndi Lauper: 'True' To Herself -
Cyndi Lauper is showing a rainbow of "true colors" on Friday, 12th June, at Milwaukee's PrideFest. This girl is still having fun and spoke one to Nunn about her recent projects.

Windy City Times: Hi, Cyndi. I met you at a signing at Tower Records years ago. You were in a rush to open for Cher. What a great live show you put on that night; you had such a connection with the audience. Now we get to see you live again at Milwaukee PrideFest! Are you still able to walk out into the audience without getting mobbed?

Cyndi Lauper: I love going into the audience. It's sharing a moment together. You can't get more connected then holding hands and singing and sharing music.

WCT: You looked great singing at the American Idol finale. How was that experience?

CL: I had a blast with Alison [ Iraheta ] . She has such a great voice and I think we are going to see big things from her in the future. The Idol system is very interesting to me. Times have changed. When I first started out there was a real viable club scene; [ it was ] hard to develop a live audience now the traditional way. And while the [ Internet ] age makes getting music to people easier, getting gigs seems harder. Idol is like music boot camp. They cram a lot of live experience into one season.

WCT: The 30 Rock episode with you spoofing "We are the World" was hilarious. How did you get involved with the project?

CL: It was a blast. The show's producers invited me. I love the show so I was thrilled to be asked.

WCT: Bring Ya to the Brink is a great album. What tracks are you playing at PrideFest?

CL: A girl's gotta have some secrets. Come on down and you'll find out. It is going to be once kick-ass party.

WCT: Any plans to release "Rain On Me?" It sounds like classic Cyndi to me.

CL: Absolutely.

WCT: I just interviewed Richard Morel, who co-produced and co-wrote several tracks on the album Bring Ya to the Brink. He said you are working on more tracks with him. What new things can we expect?

CL: I love working with Rich. He is a talented and we work very easily together. We hope to be getting together soon to start work on new tracks.

WCT: Why do you think you have such a connection with the gay community?

CL: I've always had a personal connection with the community even before my music career took off. I'm a bit of a misfit and an outsider in my younger days.

WCT: Is your tour "Girls Night Out" with Rosie O'Donnell coming to Chicago?

CL: Not on this run.

WCT: Well, then audiences from all over better make that trip to PrideFest!

14th Annual Summer Shorts Festival Features:
Music by Cyndi Lauper, Lisa Loeb & Michael John LaChiusa and Comedies by Christopher Durang & Rising Star Marco Ramirez.

"America's Short Play Festival" wants to make South Florida audiences rock with laughter, both figuratively and literally. City Theatre's 14th Annual Summer Shorts Festival kicks things up a notch with three distinct performance series under the nationally-acclaimed Summer Shorts Festival umbrella:

A rocking new Shorts 4 Kids line-up for families with tunes penned by Grammy Award Winner Cyndi Lauper and breakout artist Lisa Loeb ("Stay: I Missed You") along with a mix of fast and funny plays for families and a new "Create-a-Short" Contest featuring the work of young artists; the company's naughty, bawdy late night undershorts Series featuring sinful comedies by the nation's hottest talents along with music penned by Tony-nominated writer Michael John LaChiusa ("The Wild Party"); and its celebrated Signature Shorts Series, which returns to its strong comedic roots with previous festival favorites Christopher Durang ("For Whom the Southern Belle Tolls" and "The Hardy Boys and the Mystery of Where Babies Come From") and South Florida's prolific Michael McKeever ("Splat!" and "Laura Keene Goes On.") Signature Shorts will also feature a dark comedy by Harold Pinter.

Taken together, the Summer Shorts Festival trio of programs will perform at and in association with the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Miami from May 28 - June 21, 2009 followed by a summer residency at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Ft. Lauderdale from June 25 - 28, 2009.

The Carbonell Award-winning festival has become a nationally recognized event, "partners with America's most prestigious theatre festival, the Actor's Theatre of Louisville, and in residence at our region's two premier performing arts centers," said Stephanie Norman, City Theatre Co-Founder and Executive Director. "With a wealth of the nation's best writers - and now, musicians -- penning work for our stages we felt that this year's line-up needed to be hilarious, poignant- and certainly rocking. We've also added a "Shorts Support" series of backstage passes and meet-the-artist parties to give festival lovers a chance to get up close and personal with the process from page to stage."

Adds City Theatre Artistic Director, Stuart Meltzer, "I'm incredibly excited about the plays and production values for this year's festival - and think audiences are in for a completely fresh, new take on Summer Shorts. The new artists we've added to the festival this year are nationally known talents combined with festival stalwarts such as frequent festival favorite Rich Orloff and South Florida's nationally rising star, Marco Ramirez. With 14 actors, 13 directors and 23 playwrights, this year's Summer Shorts Festival is going to be bursting at the seams with creative energy."

City Theatre's acting ensemble for Signature Shorts and undershorts includes Carbonell Award winners Stephen G. Anthony and Laura Turnball, festival favorites Elena Maria Garcia and Stephen Trovillion along with South Florida talents John Manzelli, Amy McKenna, Erin Joy Schmidt and David Hemphill. The Shorts 4 Kids ensemble features rising talents Katherine Amadeo, Christopher Dall'au, TRoy Davidson, Nick Duckart, Vanessa Elise and Betsy Graver.

City Theatre's production team for all three series of "shorts" includes scenic and lighting designer Jeff Quinn, sound designer Steve Shapiro, costume designer Ellis Tillman and properties designer Jodi Dellaventura.

Says Co-Founder Stephanie Norman, "our website, www.citytheatre.com has a calendar full of performances, parties, promotions, meet-the-artist receptions and family activities.
