Below is a summary of what was said by David Thornton and Darko Lungulov at the Here & There Press Conference on 28th February 2009.![]() David Thornton, actor in the film "There and Here" by Darko Lungulov: "It was fantastic working with Darko. He fared incredibly well in working with an international crew. To be more precise – with an international crew from two continents! With a crew including Germans, Japanese, Americans, young and old... It was great working with them. I say that also because the budget for this film was extremely tight and hence the shooting, especially in New York, was like a guerilla action. We have often been forced to change things on the move, but we fared well. The most beautiful thing is that the lack of money bothered nobody. The reason may have lied in the fact that there are no divas in this film, except for one. And she is not a film diva, but a musical one. It's my wife Cyndi Lauper, who has given her wholehearted support to Darko and this film. As you probably already know, she wrote the music for it. Cyndi is that kind of person, she will always support a young and relatively unknown author. For someone like Darko, it is very important because he is coming from Serbia, a country with so many bad PR in the recent years. But Serbia is much more than politics and Darko's film is precisely that; a film about love and interpersonal relations. It's a nice change. I have enjoyed the shooting in Serbia and I sincerely hope that before returning to America we will succeed in "connecting the dots" for some new project to work again together on. That's why I came to Belgrade; I didn't come only for the premiere of the film "There and Here" on FEST. I came to Belgrade to see whether there's a chance for a new project with Darko or anyone who has ideas he can articulate. I find working with people from Serbia extremely interesting," says David Thornton, actor in the film "There and Here". ![]() Darko Lungulov, director of the film "There and Here": The first full-feature film of the director and the scriptwriter of the film "There and Here" will close the 37th FEST. The film made by an international crew from two continents was awarded the initial resources for production on the Competition for the Funding of Film Production of the Belgrade City Hall. The scenario for the film was extended the award of the Balkan Script Development Fund on the Thessalonica Film Festival. "It's really a great honor for me to have my film closing FEST. I grew up with FEST and Kinoteka. Many years ago, I spent the night waiting to buy tickets for Walter Hill's "Warriors". It's interesting that my film "There and Here" features Antoine Pagan, who played a Latino gang member in the said Walter Hill film. I can say that I was "educated" on FEST and I find it is the right place for my film to begin its life in Serbia. There were several financial tight spots and one of the biggest was at the beginnign of the filming of the Belgrade part of the plot. Fortunately, the sponsors – which I will not be itemzing here for fearing of forgetting someone – helped us and I hereby want to thank them. Without their support, we wouldn't have been able to finish the shooting. What is good is that I find that the film had a good karma and that everyone working on it embarked on it with all their heart. Many people invested effort, heart and sweat to make this film happen. The film was fortunate enought to have talented people, the mood on the filming was good, full of enthusiasm... I don't know if that's because the basis for the film was also my life story... upgraded, of course. Living in New York was neither difficult, nor ugly or easy in the first ten years. I drove that van and did my best to make ends meet. And then I returned to Serbia. When the time finally came to have some enjoyment, I came back. Source: 37th FEST. |

| A new exhibition celebrates some of Mardi Gras' most memorable costumes, and the revealing stories behind them. Matthew Aberline, principal costume designer at New Mardi Gras, remembers the incident with distinct clarity. In 2008, he was at a five-star hotel suite, preparing for Cyndi Lauper’s costume fitting. Lauper, who was in town for a series of concerts, was also scheduled to be the final act at the Mardi Gras Party. |
![]() | It had been a long process up to this point. Aberline and his small team had been working round the clock trying to finish Lauper’s yellow Marie Antoinette-inspired dress. The team decided to make it in yellow after seeing Lauper’s promotional concert posters (in which she sported a yellow bikini). To get their costume approved, the team sent four design rounds to Lauper’s team, emailing reference material, illustrations, sketches and finally, photographs of the actual dress. So when time finally came to unveil the costume, it should have been a weight of his shoulders. "There must have been a breakdown in communication," Aberline recalls. "Because before I take it out of the bag, Cyndi turns to me and said, "You know what? This better not be fucking yellow!" And I just thought to myself, "What? You approved four lots of design rounds with this concept'. Needless to say it was an uncomfortable hour that followed that." In the end, however, Cyndi came around. "She was very gracious and she looked great. When we left, she clung to my arm and said, 'I'm not letting go until you agree to come and see my show tonight'. And I did." Later on, Cyndi took to the stage at the Mardi Gras Party, in the now-infamous Mardi Gras costume. This is just one of the many stories behind some of Aberline's costume creations, which are currently being exhibited in Five Years of Fabulous at the Sydney Theatre Company. Five Years of Fabulous! The Mardi Gras Costume Exhibition runs until 14th March 2009 at Wharf 2 Gallery at The Sydney Theatre Company, Pier 4/5 Hickson Road, Walsh Bay. Free entry. |
