"Here and There" - It's love, Serbian style. But not for Robert, a New York jazz musician who has hit rock bottom. He is just the groom. Love, music, and furniture moving all collide for the distinctively coiffed tenor-playing protagonist in Darko Lungulov's Here and There.
In Serbia, Robert stays with Branko's divorced mother, the still attractive Olga, who only knows he is a friend of her son. While waiting for Branko to come through with his money, Robert discovers Belgrade is a much nicer city to be down and out in, despite many of the local' defensiveness regarding recent Serbia history. There is also no denying the charm of Branko's mother, who even convinces Robert to start playing his tenor again. However, the nature of Robert's arrangement with Branko looms over his tentative new romance. As Robert, David Thornton gives a well-modulated performance, expressing the world-weariness and desperation of a flawed, but not utterly unlikable character. Thornton will be instantly recognizable to audiences for his many supporting performances in both film and television, including the recurring role of slimy defense attorney Lionel Granger on "Law & Order: SVU." He is perfectly balanced by veteran Serbian actress Mirjana Karanovic, who brings a memorable warmth and dignity to the role of Olga. Thornton's real-life wife Cyndi Lauper also appears in a cameo role, as a friend fast losing patience with the self-destructive Robert. She also contributes an original, but forgettable, song to the film. However, the rest of Dejan Pejovic's soundtrack is quite effective, incorporating jazz, traditional Serbian Guca-style brass band music (featuring those sideways Balkan trumpets), and some lush romantic mood music. Lungulov conveys a strong sense of both cities in Here and There. It is a truly rare romantic comedy that almost completely avoids any form of sentimentality. Yet, it still has a romantic heart buried in there somewhere. While nimbly avoiding the clichés of the genre, Here and There is still a very satisfying film. It screens on May 1 and 2. | Cyndi Lauper Truly Is So Unusual Classic '80s songstress beats the drum for new film That Queens drawl is unmistakable. The moment Cyndi Lauper picks up the phone, she's bubbling over with that urban twang that makes you think any minute she's going to say, "She's so unusuahhhhl!"
Lauper says her on-screen moment with Thornton - whom she first met on the set of "Off and Running" in 1991, incidentally - was an education. "Honestly, it's a great thing for me," she says. "When I worked with Christopher ... ugh, my brain went blank, how can my mind go blank ... uh … 'The Deer Hunter'?" We offer Christopher Walken as a possibility. "Oh, yeah. Christopher Walken was great and just to friggin' sit at the same table and read with the guy is like, oooh. But my husband is a really fantastic actor. I really thought it was a privilege to do the film with him. I am in awe, but I try to make it look like I hold my own. I just wanted it to feel real so you didn’t think it was acting; so you just felt like you peeked in on some people." Source: www.metro.us |

| On 19th April 2009 the 7th TV Land Awards were recorded at Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California. The awards were broadcast on US TV: TV Land PRIME on 26th April 2009. Cyndi Lauper and David Cassidy both sang during a salute to producers Sid and Marty Krofft, who received the Pop Culture Award. The Kroffts' series ranged from "H.R. Pufnstuf" to "Land of the Lost." | There was a a Here & There Premier Afterparty held at The Eldridge in New York's East Village. Cyndi and other stars of the film attended. Below is a report from the party. This Girl Just Wants To Have Fun: PARTY SCENE. At any major arts festival in the city, you expect that at one point or another, you'll be pushing, yelling or whining your way into a packed event. I was prepared to do this, but I never expected it would be for Cyndi Lauper's party, of all places. Doesn't that girl just want to have fun?
One of the co-stars of the film, Branislav Trifunovic, was denied entry, too. After haggling for a good 15 minutes, he got past. When the publicist showed up I was finally allowed entry, but not before the bouncer looked down at me and condescendingly asked, "Do you always wear those headphones?" "Yes!" I replied enthusiastically, because, well, it's true. Among tall, glamorous model types, Lauper was nestled in the back of the club bopping to Prince's "I Would Die 4 U" in a little circle with her clean-shaven husband and a few others. She was as eye-catching and amazingly youthful in person as she's been for the last 25 years, with a bleach-blond bob, angular black top and thick-stacked heels. She stopped and paused for photos with those who asked, and looked to be having a great time. However, after ordering a $16 gimlet (no open bar!) and having my face buried in Trifunovic's shoulder because the room was so packed, it was time to put the headphones on again and make my way home. The Tribeca Film festival, NYC began on 22nd April 2009 and Here & There, a film starring Cyndi Lauper and her husband David Thornton had its duet on 23.04.09. Below are some reviews of the film.![]() NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. pop singer Cyndi Lauper and husband David Thornton share the big screen as actors at Tribeca Film Festival for the first time since the couple met on a movie set nearly 20 years ago. While they appeared as themselves in a 2005 children's movie, their scenes as a former couple in Serbian director Darko Lungulov's debut dark comedy "Here and There" are their first acting roles together since 1991's "Off and Running." "I thought it would be a great thing to be a part of and I got to be in two scenes with him," Lauper, who has also written a song for the independent film, told Reuters in a recent interview. "He's a fantastic actor." "I love storytelling so if it's a small scene about a real person then I like to do that," added the singer, who has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide and is known for 1980s hits such as "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" and "True Colors." Lauper became involved in "Here and There" after Thornton was cast in the lead role as Robert, a jaded middle-aged New Yorker who travels to Serbia to make some quick money by marrying a woman who wants to move to the United States. "Truth be told I didn't know that Cyndi was (Thornton's) wife and in passing he suggested that his wife could maybe write a song for the film," said Lungulov, laughing, as he recalled how he had to ask who his lead actor was married to. "It was great to collaborate with them, it was a lot of fun," said the director, adding that he initially had such a small budget for the film that he couldn't approach any agents or actors. It was only when his script found its way into the hands of producer Jim Stark that it generated some interest among actors in New York City and led to Lungulov casting Thornton, whose previous movies include "Unhook the Stars" and "Home Alone 3." "It was a pretty ambitious first movie," Lungulov said of filming in both New York City and Belgrade. "It was logistically not ideal for a no-budget first movie." Thornton, who married Lauper in 1991, said he was proud of how much "heart and soul" Lungulov had put into the film, which he started writing in 2004. "I read it and I thought 'I really wanted to try and be a part of this,'" he said. "He got this film made in a country where you have all of the goodwill in the world and none of the currency. This movie is a testament to one person's desire to be an artist and refusal to say no," Thornton said. Some Internet critics have already described "Here and There," which is competing in the world narrative feature competition, as one of the top 10 films to see at Tribeca. Variety described it as a "slight, extremely likable pic" that "has an outside chance at arthouse play before cable beckons." "The story here really added up for me. This is not a big picture movie statement. This is a small slice of life," Thornton said. "It's honest to life, it's not honest to the movies." Source: www.reuters.com ![]() Serbian helmer Darko Lungulov tracks two strangers in two strange lands in his first fiction outing, "Here and There," contrasting the adventures of an enterprising young Belgrade native in New York with the discoveries of an aging down-and-out New Yorker in Belgrade. Laid-back character study accrues small epiphanies with patient care, its mordant Eastern European humor tempered by a gentler sense of postwar absurdity, with vet actress Mirjana Karanovic supplying a serene wryness. Slight, extremely likable pic, a sly variant on recent immigrant movies like "The Visitor" and "Goodbye Solo," has an outside chance at arthouse play before cable beckons. American thesp David Thornton, his signature pompadour looking more straggly than usual, adds his own brand of dyspeptic cynicism to the advanced case of depression suffered by his character, Robert, a 52-year old jazz musician. Unable to work (he hasn't touched his sax in months), newly evicted and rapidly becoming persona non grata with Rose (Cyndi Lauper, Thornton's real-life wife), whom he's staying with, Robert accepts an offer of $5,000 from moving man Branko (Branislav Trifunovic) to travel to Serbia and marry Branko's g.f., Ivana, in order to legally get her into the States. The geographic route is a familiar one for helmer Lungulov; his first film, "Escape," was a docu about a woman who fled the bombings in Serbia with her children, only to find herself in the World Trade Center on 9/11. Once in Belgrade, Robert predictably proves more comfortable with the anti-American invective of Ivana's uncle than with the warm welcome provided by his hostess, Branko's mother Olga (Karanovic). Surly Robert rebuffs her overtures but, after getting back a taste of his own ungraciousness, begins to thaw, slowly flexing his atrophied social muscles and connecting to people around him, chief among them the captivating Olga. Lungulov intercuts the blossoming romance between Robert and Olga -- taking them out into the streets, markets and cafes of Belgrade -- with the travails of Branko, who's thrust into the junkyards, back alleys and police stations of the Big Apple after the theft of his van. If the Old World sections of "Here and There" proceed with attenuated timeouts in the sensually charged confines of a tight elevator or with stopovers at a neighbor's house full of memories, the events in New York hurtle toward resolution with youthful impatience, edited with a brusqueness that allows no rose-sniffing detours. Source: www.variety.com ![]() SERBS, THEY LIKE TO HAVE FUN Cyndi Lauper's in a new movie that opened at the Tribeca Film Festival. She’s really only in a couple of very good scenes in "Here and There," which was shot in New York and Belgrade, Serbia and stars her real life husband, actor David Thornton. Thornton is well known to audiences from many episodes of "Law & Order," from all the Nick Cassavetes movies, and from a sterling performance in "A Civil Action" a few years ago. But "Here and There" is kind of an indie tour de force. It reminded me of "Anna,' the great Sally Kirkland movie with Paulina Porizkova from a few years ago, and "The Visitor." It's sort of the reverse of "The Visitor," as Thornton's Robert-a middle aged, broke and depressed musician-goes on a visit to Belgrade and his life is changed. Darko Lungolov, whose 2004 documentary "Escape" won the Hamptons Film Festival audience award, says that "Here and There" is only partially autobiographical. Once, like Robert, he was a moving guy with a van in New York. That's called paying your dues. Lauper, who came to the premiere last night with her often hot pink tresses tinted a soft blonde, said she got into the film "Mainly because I live in the same house" as Thornton. But no joking-she has an Emmy Award for her work on "Mad About You" a few years ago. By the way, she also wrote the lovely theme song for "Here and There," too. Whichever distributor picks it up—it's a natural for IFC or Overture-gets the song, too. I don't know how many times "Here and There" shows this weekend, but it's worth catching-it may be the sleeper of the Tribeca Fest. It's natural and honest, with exquisite pacing. Thornton is top notch, as are all the Serbian actors surrounding him including Mirjana Karanovic—apparently a famous Serbian movie star-who plays his middle aged love interest in a style reminiscent of Susan Sarandon. Source: www.showbiz411.com ![]() With a well-deserved slot in the festival's Narrative Competition category, Darko Lungulov's new film is a gem of a romantic comedy—even though for much its runtime you can't really tell that it belongs in that genre... Indeed, when we first meet grouchy, middle-aged Robert (David Thornton), who suffers from what might be called "musician's block," romance seems to be the last thing on his, or the film's, mind. That's because he's living a life so precarious that from the opening shot one might actually suspect that he's homeless. He's not—yet—but from the way that Lungulov and DP Mathias Shoningh frame and light things, for an instant it seems that our anti-hero is waking up in some sun-dappled alley, not in an apartment that's only marginally better. The reason this fleeting moment is worth mentioning is that Here and There is chock full of such gratuitous intelligence, as Lungulov's direction utterly nails things like character, setting, and theme without seeming to work too hard at it. The result is that even as Robert's life seems to spiral out of control, we can't help but be impressed by the total control over the material that the filmmakers exert. Meanwhile, the script (also by Lungulov) manages to maintain a tone just cynical enough and just warm enough to keep the audience engaged yet wary. What it doesn't do a good job of balancing, ultimately, are the parallel narratives at its core. Biting the only hands that seem even to consider feeding him, including a completely convincing Cyndi Lauper, Robert soon finds himself in an unlikely friendship-cum-business partnership with Serbian immigrant Branko (a solid Branislav Trifunovic). Branko wastes little time involving Robert in a marriage scheme that concerns fetching his would-be bride from Serbia. Clearly conceived as a back-and-forth narrative between Robert/Belgrade and Branko/New York that would justify the title, in its final form Here and There is too asymmetrical to make this conceit fully work. It feels instead as if portions of the New York storyline were truncated during the editing process. And while the overall energy of the film probably benefits from such efficiency, there are some casualties. Chief among these are the supporting roles, which in a film like this add much of the textured humanity to the story. The third act never revisits Lauper's character, Rose, thus reducing the singer's role to little more than a cameo (although you'll want to stick around for her song over the closing credits). More problematic is the way that the key role of Branko's ally, Nuyorican mechanic Jose Escobar, is elliptically handled. Played by the always likable veteran actor Antone Pagan, Escobar is an interestingly ambiguous character and Pagan does a great job crafting a performance that reflects this while also feeling authentic. But given the build-up Escobar receives, his off-screen fate feels like a loose end, emotionally if nothing else. That's decidedly not the case, however, with the Serbian end of things, where all the characters are given some measure of closure, even if it's just a moment, a look, a one-liner. These include divorcee Olga (a wonderful Mirjana Karanovic), the hysterically anti-American Mirko (Goran Radakovic, whose sneering "Welcome to Serbia—country in transition" is one of the film's best lines) and Tosha (a practically movie-stealing Fedja Stojanovic). In the end, then, an argument could be advanced that the title refers not to juxtaposed locations/cultures but to Robert's solo journey, which initially feels like a displacement but eventually results in a reuniting of the character with the best aspects of himself. To its credit, though, Here and There never devolves into a simplistic tale of "How Robert Got His Groove Back." That's a tribute largely to the eye-opening performance by Thornton, who may be most recognizable from his various appearances in the Law and Order franchise. Here he handles the comedic and dramatic with equal, and equally understated, skill—his face seems to tell stories even when he's not speaking. Moreover, the director has integrated his work quite well into the film's overall strategy as a series of well-observed, entertaining scenes that often recall Jim Jarmusch's finest work, minus the artistic self-consciousness. And just when one starts to grow impatient waiting for a complication that would set the plot in a new direction, it arrives in a manner that's disarmingly effective and plausible. Yet for all its surface originality and risk-taking, Here and There is a very conventional film at heart; in fact, you can see many of both its heart-wrenching and heart-warming moments on the horizon well before they arrive. Still, this somehow does little to mar the film's charm. For these reasons Here and There must be considered is a thinking person's date movie of the highest order. Sure, sometimes the romance is too cute. When Robert gets cream from a dessert on his nose, or when there's an intrusion of an overly "soulful" sax into the otherwise sophisticated score, the film starts to verge on schmaltz. But such moments are few and far between. What you'll take away instead are all the pleasurable performances and the enormously clever writing, which includes a killer last line. So all in all, Here and There represents the best kind of indie filmmaking—it takes a modest but timeless premise and builds something from it that is quietly remarkable, a story both reaffirming and fresh in its message about what it means to be human. Source: www.firefox.org ![]() When we talk about green card marriages in this country, we're usually thinking about some kind of impoverished Mexican or Eastern European immigrant, desperate to get to this country and marry an American to live off the fat of our land. But what about the other way around? What if a New Yorker-- a sarcastic, dyed-in-the-wool New Yorker-- went to Serbia to marry another man's girlfriend and bring her back to the States? That's the premise of Here and There, Darko Lungulov's film that stars David Thornton as Robert, a New York man who is convinced by his new business partner to travel to Serbia and marry the man's girlfriend. Once he arrives in Belgrade, though, Robert finds himself falling in love with his friend's mother, Olga, a divorcee whose company helps him feel like he's coming back to live. I spoke to Darko and David last week, just after their film had premiered at Tribeca, and asked them about the challenges of making a film in Serbia, a country not exactly known for its stability. Turns out that just weeks before David was to head over there to begin filming, the American embassy was taken over and burned by angry protesters. Watch the video below to hear how they managed to get over a roadblock that could have killed the production-- and why David became a celebrity in Serbia as a result. From today's The Sun Online: The Girls Just Wanna Have Fun singer has urged Susan to accept a role in a film with her and actress Tippi Hedren. Earlier this week The Sun revealed how Section B’s director Darla Rae has asked the Britain’s Got Talent star to appear in the film and sing a duet with Queen Emily David, a finalist on "America's Got Talent." On hearing about the offer Cyndi gushed: "That's great, that's fantastic. I think she's a kick. I really like her. "She stated very clearly 'I always wanted to sing in front of a large audience' and as soon as she did she said 'thank you' and left. "She wasn't really interested in what they had to say. She did what she wanted to do and that was sing. That's what wonderful singers are like." Lauper was being interviewed for her latest film "Here and There," which stars her husband David Thornton and in which she has a small role. The movie premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival this week. Award-winning Rae said: "Susan studied at Edinburgh Acting School in the early '90s but was forced to leave and care for her sick mother. "I'd love to help her finally realize her dream of being an actress! We've even sent offers through the local pub manager where Susan sings Karaoke." The offer arrived by FedEx at Susan's home on Monday, but the 48-year-old has not yet commented on whether she’ll accept the part. Source: www.thesun.co.uk |

The Tribeca Film Festival doesn't officially get underway till Wednesday, but a number of this year's films have had pre-fest screenings – One of these is "Here and There," a deadpan romantic comedy by Serbian director Darko Lungulov. The movie was shot in both Belgrade, Lungulov's home town, and New York, where he studied filmmaking. It concerns a glum, down-and-out Manhattan saxophone player named Robert (David Thornton) who in order to make some money accepts an offer by a young Serbian expatriate (Branislav Trifunovic) to travel to Belgrade, marry the guy’s girlfriend (in order to get her a green card) and bring her back to New York.![]() The picture is mostly in English, and it has a loose, inscrutable charm that recalls early Jim Jarmusch films like "Stranger Than Paradise." (Lungulov is an effusive fan of Jarmusch – who himself plays a prominent part in another of this year's TFF films, the CBGB documentary "Burning Down the House.") As Robert schlubs around the Serbian capital, drinking beer with friendly locals, bonding with houseplants (a memorably droll scene) and fending off a bosomy shopgirl who wouldn’t mind having a green card of her own, the picture takes small, surprising turns that remind you how much a director can accomplish with little more than an original sensibility and some fine actors. Thornton, whose movie credits range from "The Last Days of Disco" to "Alpha Dog," may be most widely known for his recurring role as a snotty defense attorney in two of the "Law & Order" series. Here, playing a character whose alienation from the world sometimes borders on autism, he anchors the movie through the subtlest of means – even his haystack haircut has things to tell us. For reasons almost entirely mercurial, it's a mesmerizing performance. (Thornton's wife, Cyndi Lauper, makes a cameo appearance in the picture and also contributes a song to the soundtrack.) | A pair of Moline brothers' memories about Little League baseball and parental involvement are the basis for a movie that’s going to be shot in the Quad-Cities this year. "The Grand Slammer," based on a mock documentary by Ryan and Tyler Cullen, is scheduled to be filmed in this area later this summer. "That's where the inspiration came from, definitely," Ryan Cullen, now based in Las Vegas, said in a telephone interview Monday. "I wanted to write a movie based on my experiences there." A 1997 Moline High School graduate, he played Little League baseball for a team his father coached. The movie takes a players' perspective of their parents in the stands, producer-director Terrell Tannen said. "He captured the humor in Little League baseball," Tannen said of Cullen. "Most of the movies are how kids need to work as a team and come together, and most stories are how losers become winners. Our project is different from that." "We want our story to highlight the distorted emphasis on winning that seems to be prevalent in Little League today. We want to satirize that." In "The Grand Slammers," parents who misbehave at games are placed in an outfield "jail" from which the movie gets its title. Singer and Emmy-winning actress Cyndi Lauper plays the mother of a player who is recently transplanted from New York. Lauper's real-life husband, David Thornton, plays her husband and the team's coach. Their real-life son, Declyn, 11, has the role of the player. Much of the rest of the cast, including enough players to fill four Little League teams, will be cast in the Quad-Cities. "We're going to try and get it going for this summer to shoot in the Quad-Cities area and that part of Iowa," Tannen said. Tannen, whose film credits include the movie "Gospel Hill," and co-producer Scott Rosenfelt, who was the producer of "Mystic Pizza" and "Teen Wolf" as well as the executive producer of "Home Alone," will be in the Quad-Cities later this week to begin looking at locations and meeting with personnel. Now with four studio albums under their belt, and rumours circulating that they are about to record new material with Yoko Ono and Cyndi Lauper, their roster of collaborators shows both an eye for up-and-coming talent (Dizzee Rascal), a nod to musical heroes (Siouxie Sioux) and the, erm, harder to explain (JC Chasez of NSYNC). Source: www.list.co.uk Basement Jaxx will be appearing on Pete Tong's Radio 1 show this Friday 17th April between 7pm & 9pm UK time. They'll be chatting about the forthcoming album and giving the brand new single, "Raindrops", it's radio debut ! |

| David Byrne Unveils Concept Album Featuring Santigold, Cyndi Lauper, Sharon Jones, Tori Amos and More David Byrne has begun leaking more details about his upcoming concept album, Here Lies Love, which is set to feature 22 guest vocalists and tell the story of the one-time first lady of the Philippines: Imelda Marcos. According to Byrne, the forthcoming record is a joint effort between the former Talking Head and Norman Cook (aka Fatboy Slim), and will feature singers such as Santigold, Cyndi Lauper, Roisin Murphy, Sharon Jones, Alice Russell, Martha Wainwright and Tori Amos. Each vocalist will sing a different track, with the album following Marcos "from her childhood spent in poverty and her rise to power to her ultimate departure from the palace," says Byrne’s website. | ![]() |
| "We've got three more singers who have still to record on it but we're almost there,"Byrne recently told BBC 6Music of the album's progress. "There is a different singer on every song, including Sharon Jones from Amy Winehouse's backing band the Dap Tones, Alice Russell and Tori Amos. There's a lot of singers, it goes on and on." In 2007, Byrne played a rough draft of the project at a show in New York City, and the album version of Here Lies Love was originally scheduled to be release at the beginning of this year through Nonesuch. However, at this point, no firm release date has been confirmed for the record's release. Source: www.exclaim.ca Read David Byrne's Blog from April 2008. | Below is a special statement released by Cyndi Lauper and her Team concerning the True Colors Tour. Here's what it said: |
![]() | Dear Friends, For the past two summers, the True Colors Tour has been honored to travel across North America to critical acclaim and wildly enthusiastic crowds as we celebrate the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) community and advocate for the basic values and freedoms that should be shared by all Americans through the power of music and comedy. All of us at the True Colors Tour have been hard at work planning the best way to hit the road again given the current economic climate and to ensure that we keep our shows fresh and exciting. We have taken many factors into account, including the survey responses of over 2,000 past tour attendees. Since early spring is typically when we announce our summer tour, we wanted to take a moment to update you on the future of the True Colors Tour. |
| We are excited to announce that we are shaking things up! While we will not be touring this summer as we have in the past, we will be hitting the road again in new and exciting ways. Currently, we are not ready to make any touring announcements, but we look forward to soon sharing with all of you our upcoming plans for 2009 and 2010, including the True Colors Tour going international. Be sure you are a member of the True Colors Tour's Email List to be among the first to receive these announcements! One announcement we are able to make is the launch of the True Colors Fund's new and exciting website. The True Colors Fund is the non-profit arm of the True Colors Tour which we founded last summer in an effort to continue our charitable work even when we are not on the road. The Fund focuses on strengthening the GLBT and allied community by helping to grow the number of volunteers and donors to the non-profit organizations working on their behalf each and every day. Later this year, the Fund will launch an extensive public awareness and education campaign as a part of this work. Learn more about the True Colors Fund, the upcoming campaign and how you can support the Fund's work at www.TRUECOLORSFUND.org. Finally, we would like to thank each and every one of you who have come to one of our shows, shared in the celebration and taken part in spreading the Tour's message of equality for all. In addition, we would like to thank our sponsors and non-profit partners who have supported us the past two years, including the Human Rights Campaign, American Airlines, iTunes, LOGO, Sirius Satellite Radio, PFLAG and CenterLink. We look forward to seeing you out on the road soon! All our best, Cyndi Lauper, Lisa Barbaris & Jonny Podell Partners, True Colors Concerts, LLC ![]() |
